Tuition

It is basic to the philosophy of Shorinji Kempo that no instructor should make his/her living from teaching this art. A minimal monthly tuition is charged to each student to cover the rental space, insurance, equipment and other operating expenses. By eliminating the profit motive, it can be seen that the teachers are teaching for the love of the art and are sincere in their efforts to see you succeed. All instructors are strictly certified by WSKO.

Class Format

Below is the typical class format used by all Shorinji Kempo dojos.

Warm-up (Taiso)
To prevent injury, we practice many stretching techniques that help relax and strengthen the body and increase flexibility.
Basics (Kihon)

Here is where we practice our basic movement, striking, blocking and dodging techniques. Please check our Videos section to see an example.

Hard Techniques (Goho)
It is here where you will work with a partner practicing various striking and counter-striking (hard system) techniques.
Meditation (Chikon)
At this time we will recite our Dokun (Mediation, Creed, and Oath). We then proceed to perform about 5 to 10 minutes of seated meditation (Zazen). It is during this period where we have a chance to renew our energy and spirit.
Philosophy Discussion (Howa)

This is what separates us from almost all other martial arts. This is typically led by sensei or a senior kenshi. Topics are typically from Kaiso's teachings but can also include basic self-defense strategy.

Soft Techniques (Juho)
Once again you work with a partner to practice many compliant techniques such as wristlocks, releases, takedowns, etc.
